1. Defining Internal Validity and it
I do not agree with Helman and Bookspan's views as Sesame being sexist in Sesame Street: Brought to you by the Letters M-A-L-E. First, the authors are looking too deep into a simple children's show. Describing a skit from the show in which a male is asked about his job and the female is not because of her age, the author's remark, "But none of the female muppets are old enough to earn a living" (Helman & Bookspan para6). Sesame Street, being a children's show, does not think of these issues when writing their shows as their goal is to reach out to the children and teach them things like the alphabet. The writers are not purposely giving being sexist and nor are they. Second, the authors argue that the "girls" of the show look like humans while the males are beloved animals. The authors have seem to have forgotten that one of the biggest stars of the show, Miss Piggy, is not a child, male, or human and is very popular. Furthermore, the characters gender is merely determined by the people portraying their voices because there physical features could go either way. The only logical argument the authors use to portray the show as sexist is the amount of male to female characters. . A child surely not even notice or be affected by the ratio of men and women in the show. The rest of the show however has nothing sexist to due with the actual skits and presentation. This is just a case of someone looking too deep into an unintentional matter.
