Paradise

.
To Neville, Drughat is a Paradise, he describes it as peaceful village with no droning engines, no machinery. For the old man the paradise is the western world. To Neville the old man's dream sounds like a nightmare. Neville envies the Drughat people their peacefull life, but if he got the chance to live like them it would not make him happy. It is easy for Neville to like the place, because the people there try to do everything to make him happy and make him feel comfortable. He is representing the typical western male that has already judged the villagers of Drughat when he does not even consider the possibility that they might know who he is. Neville sees Thakali, his wife and son and the rest of the people there as ingenious villagers of a small, unspoiled mountain society. Neville's life is not only basically, but also materialistically secured and therefore his existence is built more on what he wants and not what he needs. It is also necessary to add that the story is written 3rd person singular and entirely seen from Neville's point of view; thus involving the reader, who is able to identify himself with Neville in many ways understands his concerns of what might happen to Drughat if it were to become a tourist attraction. The villagers do not think of western civilization as an entirely evil thing. Living in poverty they have probably only heard about the west and its benefits. For Neville paradise is to go to a place like this village and enjoy the fresh air, the beautiful landscapes and the hardworking people. These people know how to appreciate just the small things. He also thinks that when people come to the "less-educated" people, it means some kind of doom for them and their culture. He would not ruin the peaceful quietness of this area with tourists from America and Europe who would think they owned the place. Apparently Neville does not see this or accept it, since he believes that coming from civilized society is to know what is best for them.
