Abortion is, and has been for many years, one of the most controversial issues. Currently abortion is still legal and it should be kept this way for many reasons. Illegalizing abortion could lead to many deaths and more cases of abandonment and neglect.
Every year about 800,000 women go through having an abortion. If abortion were to be made illegal, most of these women would still be searching for other ways to go through the operation. Perhaps doing it themselves, or finding an unlicensed individual to perform the abortion on them. These "back alley" abortions would be very unsanitary (it is very plausible that sterile equipment would not be used) and could lead to the death of the woman. If they do end up giving birth to unwanted child, it would lead to the problem of desertion or the mother neglecting the child and leading to its death.
There are some women who have health problems that prevent them from being able to go through childbirth and for the reason that any form of birth control is not 100% effective, these women may at some point call for an abortion. If these women had no other alternative than to have the baby, it could result in their death and the potential death of the child. However, if the child were to survive the birth, and not the mother, it would be forced to live a life without a mother.
Every year there are 132,000 reported victims of rape in the United States alone. Suppose if just one of these women were to become with child, how can they be expected to carry the child of their abuser? The child would in all probability end up in an orphanage or abandoned in the streets. If for some reason the mother decided to keep the child, it may grow up in a world of hatred and negligence by a mother still full of bitterness.
Finally there is the issue of free will. America is described as the land of the free and it should be a women's choice to bring her baby into an already overcrowded world.
