Great Expectations is, I think, a very sad and rueful story. It is because this story shows how human life is empty. Pip dismiss Joe, his most important friend, exchanging for money and a good place. I feel sorry for Pip, because he makes serious effort to become happy only to fail. I think he is as if he were a boy going on a journey looking for Blue Bird. Modest happy is in his very daily life, but he doesnt notice it. So it is really sad and rueful story. Then, Id like to took note of chapter29. Pips love for Estella is directly expressed over and over again in the chapter 29. So Id like to consider about his love. .
Did Pip truly love Estella? It is certain that he was completely fascinated by her beauty. I doubt, however, that he truly love her. When he first went to Satis House and met Estella, she insulted him very strongly. She made a fool of his hands and shoes and treated him as if he was a dog. He was really shocked and badly hurt. @He said, I was so humiliated, hurt, spurned, offended, angry, sorry I cannot hit upon the right name for the smart God knows what its name was that tears started to my eyes. (p62).
And Estellas behavior reminded Pip about his sister. He said, Within myself, I had sustained, from my babyhood, a perpetual conflict with injustice. I had cherished a profound conviction that her bringing me up by hand, gave her no right to bring me up by jerks. (p63) He thought Estellas disfavor was not justice and righteous at all, just the same as his sister. Then she mocked him every time she met him. I believe he cherishes rage and hatred toward her even though he doesnt notice it. So it is unnatural and strange that he loves her. Why did he nevertheless love her?.
In my opinion, Pip misunderstands love. He always received cruel treatment by his sister in his childhood, and he grew up seeing Joe being ill-treated by his wife. So there is a possibility of his distrust of women, not only his sister but also all of women.
