During the Cuban Missile Crisis, President John F. Kennedy had many choices presented to him of what to do, and by several different people. He had ideas from the military and from his cabinet. However, he decided on the quarantine, or blockade if you will, of Cuba, rather than a full-scale assault. This decision was one that worked well, and one that I firmly stand behind because it worked, it prevented the loss of lives, and the other options were just preposterous.
The first reason I believe that President Kennedy's choice was correct was due to the obvious fact that it worked. While defending the other stances would have involved conjectures, this method accepted by President Kennedy was tried during that time period and actually worked. There is no denying this blatant fact. Due to his choice, the United States staved off a potential nuclear war. Since this method is tried and true, there is no reason not to agree with President Kennedy's choice. Not only that, but it was non-aggressive. .
The fact that the quarantine of Cuba was non-aggressive was an important factor in my decision. Although it may have looked like the United States was being cowardly, I believe that this patriotism needs to be put on hold in order to save lives. Any military strike would have involved sacrifices, and they were sacrifices that would not have been needed. The fact that the quarantine was nonviolent is a great factor to deciding the best course of action. It is known that nonviolent protests have been the greatest form of fighting in history. Take for instance Gandhi or Martin Luther King Jr.'s nonviolent protests to be given freedom. They speak louder in the world, and get the worlds support, which is a key reason as to why the quarantine was the best course of action during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
A final reason that the quarantine was the best of the choices is that the other ideas were just absurd.
