Movie Chaplin

In the movie Modern Times Charlie Chaplin was trying to say that the industry as a whole was busy and worked the employees hard. They would speed up the assembly line, hardly give any breaks, and even thought about ideas on how to cut lunch breaks just to make more money. Also the technology the industry used was too far in advance for that time. With the workers working so hard and fast they would get stressed out. .
Chaplin was trying to say the Great Depression was hard because there were very few jobs to get and they didn't pay enough. People would do anything for food and shelter. Some would rob stores or work hard for little money. If you had a job in that time you wanted to save as much money as possible even if you had to buy a run down house to live in. In that time alot of people had dreams of a good life with a nice house and a good paying job. Since jobs were getting bad people tried to start up labor unions so the jobs would be fair to employees, but anyone caught starting a labor union would be put in jail. The police also put people in jail for dumb things. .
The fact that there was no talking during this movie made me think more about what Chaplin was trying to say. Also it made it more funny to watch and guess what the people are saying. But some parts were confusing without hearing the people talk. To me it was a pretty good silent film for its time. There should be more silent films. Only silent films I know of is by the British actor Mr. Bean.
