             Many Americans went to the west with high hopes of striking it rich.

This event lead to the expansion of the railroads. Others were in search of the free land that was given away with the Homestead Act of 1862. The Homstead Act brought many more to the west, which devastated many American cattlemen and ended the Cattle Kingdom.
             A miner's life was extremely difficult. A very few ever struck it rich and when.

             For the cattlemen life was great, but only in the beginning. The cattlemen .
             brought their cattle to the Cattle Kingdom which spread through Kanasas to Montana. .
             The Cattle Kingdom allowed the cattle to run wild, but water sources were scarce. .
             Sheep farmers let their sheep run free with cattle. The sheep cropped the grass so low .
             that the cattle could not reach it and had little to eat. Cattlemen fought with .
             sheepherders over the land. By 1900, half a million farmers moved west to the new .
             land (due to the Homestead Act of 1862) and barbed wire began to appear to protect .
