Themes in Jurassic Park

In the book, Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton depicts the dangers of genetic engineering. Throughout the entire book, this is the underlying theme, which reflects that engineering of life can never be controlled. Also, Crichton emphasizes that relying too much on computer technology isn't wise as it can fail at any point. He illustrates this when the power is turned off and the dinosaurs escape. So many things go wrong because the computers are all programmed with passwords, etc. Crichton states in the Introduction, "Biotechnology promises the greatest revolution in human history." He makes a good point in that genetic engineering shouldn't be underestimated. It can change everything.
Another theme in the book is represented by the Chaos Theory: "Chaos theory treats the behavior of a whole system like a drop of water moving on a complicated propeller surface. The drop may spiral down, or slip outward toward the edge. It may do many different things, depending. But it will always move along the surface of the propeller." Basically, this means that complex systems are not foolproof and will always behave unpredictably. The scientists in Jurassic Park are convinced in the beginning that their plan is foolproof. Dr. Wu and Hammond both reassure everyone that the park is completely safe, when in fact it is not. (demonstrated later).
Overall, I believe the main theme of the book is very clear and sends a strong message: the outcome can be terrible when human knowledge is combined with greed and isn't shaken by wisdom, ethics or responsibility.
