Urban Dynamics in Pyrmont


These suburbs were devoted to industry, warehouse and ports; they were also closed to transport and to the market. The area was also an important residential area with a distinctive architectural and community character that had a population peaking at 30 000. This was one of the main reasons why it was located so close to the Harbour as the transport was rather poor in those days so had to be a s close as possible. This changed with the introduction of the automobile and the demanded increase in industry size due to more mechanized rendering. The development of new port technology needed new facilities and large areas of land for container storage, known as containerization also caused this movement. .
             The construction of larger industrial sites occurred in the outer areas of Sydney that were close to the major transport routes. The result of this was extreme urban decay of Pyrmont area during the 1960's and 1970's with abandoned and rundown factories and warehouses dominating the streetscape. The population of the area had declined dramatically to only 3000 and the whole area had taken on the atmosphere of Urban Decay. .
             It was not until the late 1980's that the next phase in Pyrmont's existence began. It was at this time that the inner city area had become more attractive to other functions including; recreation, tourism, commercial and residential. As the city of Sydney developed further as a world city, developer along with the government realized the potential of the ex-industrialised suburbs around the Harbour foreshore. .
             In 1985 the City East Development plan was launched. The plan was to involve the renewal of areas such as Pyrmont, Ultimo and Darling Harbour in residential and commercial sites. The area would be renewed to medium-rise housing within a high density community that would combine the technological advances and expectations of the twenty-first century with the human needs and vitality of inner-city living.
