One of the greatest artists of the Italian renaissance was Michelangelo. His full name was Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni and he was a magnificent sculptor, painter, architect and poet.
He was the greatest sculptor since the Roman times.
Michelangelo was born March the 6th, 1475 in Caprice, Italy. Two weeks after his birth, his family moved to Florence. He was the 2nd of five sons.
He spent his early years living with his nurse in a small village outside Florence. The countryside around this little village was rich with stone. It was during these early years that Michelangelo would watch stone masons and sculptors hard at work. It is said this was his inspiration. .
At the age of 6 his mother died. After 4 years his father married again and decided that Michelangelo should attend school. But Michelangelo was not interested in becoming a scholar. All he wanted to do was draw. He was so passionate with drawing, he would copy the works of famous painters. Soon his father would recognize his talent and allowed him to attend Domenico Ghirlandaio's workshop. Dominico soon noticed Michelangelo showing astonishing talent. At 13 he painted a kneeling figure in one of Dominico's frescos. .
After 2 years Michelangelo was then to attend the sculpture school of Lorenzo the Magnificent at the Medici Palace in Florence. He took quickly to sculpture and showed extraordinary talent and remained with the Medici family for some years. .
After the death of Lorenzo, Michelangelo created the statue of Hercules in memory of his good friend.
He was to leave the Medici family and Florence, eventually settling in Rome where he created the Pieta, the Virgin Mary holding the dead Jesus. This statue was so magnificent that pilgrims from all over Europe flocked to see it.
The next statue Michelangelo was to create was David standing 17 feet tall with god like beauty and of physical perfection. This statue established him as the greatest sculptor in all of Italy.
