Realistic Conflict theory

Realistic conflict is the notion that prejudices arise when social groups must compete for scarce resources and opportunities. According to the realistic conflict the competition between groups intensifies over scarce conditions such as a decent job or a decent income. When this happens" prejudices and aggression between the groups can come about. .
A social psychologist by the name of Muzafer Sherif conducted an experiment to test the theory of realistic conflict. In his study he put two teams on different sides of the camp, which included middle class eleven and twelve year olds who did not know they were in an experiment. The two teams were going to compete against each other and what ever team won would receive prizes that were alluring to both groups, so they were essentially competing for a scarce resource. When the teams were not competing against each other they were still mean to one another. After two weeks had pasted both teams showed that they had hatred toward each other, the experiment showed how realistic conflict can bring of prejudices in people. .
Relative deprivation is the sense that one lacks resources in comparison to another group. Realistic conflict and relative deprivation can both produce prejudice feelings and they both are outcomes of the competition for resources. A major difference is that it seems relative deprivation is the result of realistic conflict. A good example of this could be competition between minorities and Caucasians competing to get a job in the local school district. Now a day we have more minority children in our schools so there is a high demand for teachers who are of a minority group. The minorities might feel they have more of a chance because they know that diversity in education is growing so they may feel superior toward a Caucasian individual. Therefore out of competition for getting the job in a school a sense of relative deprivation may be felt by the Caucasian individual.
