Symbols of Escape

Women had a traditional role in society during this period in time; normally women would marry a gentleman and raise a family. Amanda was worried about her daughter Laura, who was very shy and lost in her own world. Amanda was afraid that Laura, now in her mid twenties, would never find a husband. Amanda made this her mission in life and even convinced Tom to bring home a gentleman caller so he may meet his sister. As Amanda prepared for the arrival of Laura's first gentleman caller she dressed for the occasion, it is here we see another symbol of escape as Amanda puts on an old dress and remembers a pleasant memory from her youth, "Now just look at your mother! (She wears a girlish frock of yellowed voile with a blue silk sash. She carries a bunch of jonquils - The legend of her youth is nearly revived, Feverishly.)" "This is the dress in which I led the cotillion. Won the cakewalk twice at Sunset Hill, wore one spring to the Governor's ball in Jackson!"(1935). This was a time of happiness and security for Amanda and a time that she escaped to often. .
Tom Wingfield, the youngest of Amanda's children was the sole provider of the family. Tom's father, a telephone man, left the family when Tom was eight years old. Tom is portrayed as a dreamer, searching for adventure, but his mother places the responsibility of providing for the family on his shoulders. This is evident as Amanda reacts to Tom's lack of interest to his job at the warehouse, "What right have you got to jeopardize your job?" "Jeopardize the security of us all? How do you think we"d manage if you were-" (1920) " Overcome Selfishness! Self, self, self is all you ever think of!"(1926). Overwhelmed with the responsibility placed on him and a desire burning inside of him to explore the world, Tom went to the movies nightly, here he found a way to escape the present and the realities of life. Amanda had confronted Tom and asked him where he goes at nights, and he replied, "I go to the movies because - I like adventure.
