Mrs. Dalloway

Does Anyone Really Know What Love Is?.
Dalloway first hit me as being somewhat a boring read, but as I read on I picked up on an interesting concept that involved the idea of love. The word love is used very loosely in this book and in life. Love is a powerful feeling and should be cherished if one has the fortunate opportunity to experience it in all its glory. In Mrs. Dalloway people chose who they think will be a suitable husband instead of actually feeling that sensation of love that makes you join your life eternally with another and have no regrets about your decision.
In Clarissa's life, love seems to have passed her bye. Clarissa has the heart of an interesting and caring man by the name of Peter Wagner. Peter seemed to truly love Clarissa and would do anything for her. He even found beauty in her imperfections. Peter has interests in his own personal character, religious poetry, and people's eternal spirit and these qualities should make Peter appealing to any woman in their right mind. Clarissa made a mistake when she chose to marry the Prime Minister. She realizes this when she finds herself as just a "perfect hostess" to her husband instead of a person he loves unconditionally. I don't feel bad for Clarissa because her views on love are clouded. She speaks of marriage needing silence and independence from one another to work smoothly. On the other hand "with Peter everything had to be shared; everything gone into" and Clarissa found this "intolerable". If one is truly in love you don't think about needing silence and independence, independence is something you need before you get married to find yourself. In love, you are joined with another till death and are eternally grateful to have that persons love till the end. Clarissa has issues that we are going to see later on in this book and I have a feeling that she attained these qualities from her mother. Clarissa and her mother don't know what true love is.
