Antigone

Tiresias is a blind prophet from Thebes, who is loyal to his city and wants good fortune for it. Creon relies on Tiresias to help make the decisions of Thebes. Tiresias was the one who told Oedipus of his prophet only because Oedipus insisted. Once Oedipus was banished from Thebes, Creon took over as King. Tiresias is Creon's advisor and has been ever since he became ruler of Thebes. Creon usually follows the words of Tiresias, except when Tiresias is requesting Creon to save Antigone. Creon tells Tiresias before Creon's prophet, "I owe you a great deal, I swear to that. I've never wavered from your advice before- (Sophocles, 1070). Creon's tone changes after Tiresias tells Creon of his prophet, "you shoot your arrows at my head like archers at the target- (Sophocles, 1071). Tiresias knows the future of Creon if Antigone dies but Creon does not want to listen to Tiresias. .
Tiresias in Scene 6 comes to Creon with his prophet if Antigone dies. Creon will bring tragedy to his life. Tiresias explains, "All men make mistakes, it is only human. Stubbornness brands you for stupidity "pride is a crime- (Sophocles, 1071). After Tiresias informs Creon that his decision to punish Antigone needs to be changed, Creon's inflexible ways prevent him from obtaining the real meaning that Tiresias is stating. "I mean you well. I give you sound advice. It's best to learn from a good adviser when he speaks for your own good: it's pure gain,"" states Tiresias (Sophocles, 1071). At that point, Creon should have recalled all the times Tiresias's prophets have been accurate and changed his mind about Antigone's future. Instead, Creon continues to follow through with his original plan due to his unwillingness to be undermined by Tiresias and have Antigone walk away from her wrong doing as a heroine. What is so tragic about Antigone's death is that Creon had so many opportunities and warnings from others but he chose to ignore them.
