The book Night, takes place in 1941. In a town of Sighest, Transylvania there lived a typical family. Elie Wiesel, the narrator, lived with his father Chlomo, his mother, and three sisters Tzipora, Hilda, and Bea. In the beginning of the story, Elie is 12 years old, and is a very religious boy. One day, Elie meets Moshe the Beadle at the temple. Moshe is the caretaker, and in time becomes Elie's spiritual mentor. Moshe the Beadle is sent off in cattle trains with other Jews soon after, and when he returns, he tells of the horrors that occurred. The Jews of Sighest, including Elie, don't believe his stories of the happenings while under the watch of the German police, the Gestapo. .
The people of Sighest return to their lives, but soon after, the German troops appear. The residents of the town didn't see this as a threat. Even when the ghettos went up in the center of town, they were unaware of their future. Before long, some of the Jews are deported, while other families like Elie's where to be sent later. .
Eventually Elie and his family are sent in the cattle wagons. Even though the cars were packed up to eighty people tight, and they spent a great amount of time in the wagons, this was the least of their upcoming troubles. When the wagons arrived at Birkenau, Elie is separated from his mother and sisters. Elie and his father enter the camp and see appalling things. They saw babies being thrown into ditches to die. .
The next stop for the captured Jews was Auschwitz. Their stay there was temporary, and they are moved to Buna. By this time, many of them have lost all faith in God. During their stay in Buna, all the captured citizens are sent to the crematory. Elie finds himself at the hospital after suffering from a foot injury. After surgery, Elie, his father, and the others are relocated due to the advancement of the Russian Army. The prisoners must run continuously in the harsh winter weather, and most don't make it.
