The world is an imperfect place and a stone of criticism may be cast in many directions. One direction in which I would cast the stone would be on the decaying effects of freedom on the parent-child relationship. This nation was founded on Christian principles. Such constantly deviating principles include preserving the sanctity of marriage, as well as honoring one's father and mother. Since then, times have changed and our freedom has allowed us to practice our own beliefs.
Over time, the American has fought to protect his rights in society, ever expanding the boundaries of freedom. It has come to the point where, since one wishes to do as he pleases, moral obligation has become obsolete. Whenever a person will go to such lengths as to question another's actions, the inquiry is easily retorted with the phrase, "It's my life, and I can do whatever I want with it". The "freedom" that America has so desperately desired has now resulted in promiscuity, unwanted pregnancies, STDs, and thousands of broken homes. .
However, we as a whole are all to blame when it comes to taking responsibility. For example, a teenage girl may find herself in a broken home with a single mother . This girl, which we"ll call Mary, has grown up as the product of a teenage pregnancy, a failed marriage, and now finds herself as split property between two rivaled parents, whose only time as a whole family is when she is dropped off at her father's house by her mother. When Mary asks her parents why they broke up, her mother replies, "It just didn't work out." She grows up feeling unloved, and reaching out for someone to tell her that they won't ever leave her. This call is heeded by Tim, a young teenage boy whose hormones are raging. After three months together, Tim asks to have sex with Mary. She is often warned by her mother not to make the same mistake she did. Mary replies, "It's my life." Unable to be penetrated by her mother, she gives in to her boyfriend and finds herself as a pregnant teenager and a statistic, the same as thousands of girls in America.
