It was the least that could be done to help Texas and when Texas accepted our invitation of annexation we once again aided in their own defense. As well as in the defense of Texas it was defense of the entire Union because if another nation gained control, they could easily cause much havoc in the US through Texas. .
In the diary of President James K. Polk, he wanted to create a permanent boundary between Mexico and the US, and that to do so the American Minister in Mexico was instructed to purchase any territory necessary. The Rio Grande seemed to be the best place for a border and California needed to be purchased and the offer of $15 or $20 million was made, but still willing to go up to $40 million. California was also wanted because of British speculation and intent to posses California. Great Britain or any foreign monarch that could establish that close to the US was an imperialistic threat. Therefore under the Monroe Doctrine it was imperative to obtain any and all lands that would create this type of threat. .
The Secretary of War William L. Marcy send orders to General Zachary Taylor of the US Army to advance and occupy areas of the easy bank of the Rio Grande as soon as possible, and use the river as transport if necessary.
