Differential Treatment of Siblings

Siblings are often treated differently by their parents leading to the reason of why children from the same family tend to be quite different from one another. According to research, PDT (parental differential treatment) influences sibling rivalry and lower self - esteem among children, especially those who receive lesser amounts of attention from their parents. As children approach adolescence they become more and more inapt to make their own decisions about their behaviors and their cohorts. This period of adolescence that contributes to extreme transformations in children may be why siblings become different from one another. .
Siblings form one of the most unique relationships within the family unit. This exclusive relationship is often a combination of tremendous loyalty and conflict, causing a confusing pattern for all family members. This relationship amongst siblings is very important hence they are emotionally connected longer than any other relationship experienced in life (Padgett, 1). .
This paper will explore many aspects of the parent child relationship and the differential treatment of siblings by their parents. This paper will also discuss whether offspring gender has an effect on parental favoritism and how siblings react differently to not only favoritism but also to differentian of punishment amongst siblings. Many view a differential treatment of siblings as abusive while others view this form of favoritism as inconclusive. There is a stronger trend for more researchers and psychologists to view favoritism as a form of physiological abuse. A smaller portion of this population views favoritism as something that parents should not worry about. These researchers believe that it is in fact "the child who gets more attention on a regular basis who sometimes has a harder time with it. She may feel anxious about living up to her parents ideal, especially if she feels she hasn't earned the praise" (Smith, 1).
