Alaska

Rain, cold, and hail. Watching the "termination dust" creep down the mountains into the Anchorage bowl. Having a mama moose show up with two or three babies in tow. Watching your trees shrivel in the cold. Running out to the hot tub in a bikini in twenty degree weather. Dropping your towel in the water. Chasing after your dog in your bikini after he darts out the door when you want back inside.
Winter is famed for being pitch black and cold back home. Although there isn't much sunlight and it can get very depressing, even the most miserable season in Alaska is beautiful. There are nights in winter when the sky turns red with snow and mornings when you wake up to a cobalt blue sky and an intensely white landscape. Trees laden with so much snow that it seems the branches will snap under another flake. Untouched powder in the backyard that will be despoiled by moose tracks within days or even hours. Power lines camouflaged with inches of snow so much so that they look like marshmallows. Black and white chickadees fluttering around like crazy things through the glittery snow. Green wreaths with red ribbons and frost decorating mailboxes concealed by feet of snow. There are nights when you don't want the sun to come up. Nights during winter that are accented by a roaring bonfire and good friends. Nights when the Northern Lights come out unexpectedly and dance for you. When wolves howl at the crystal clear moon dangling over the inlet and stars dot the sky with unsystematic precision. Nights when all you need is good music and a six foot fire. When all you need is a tent, someone to snuggle, wool socks, and a hug.
Spring, when everything is melty and gross. The days are getting longer in five to ten minute increments daily. The lakes aren't thawed until May but that stops no one from trying the water out anyways. Softball practice takes place daily on squishy football fields.
