Is there really life after death? Or is this belief just an idea some hold onto? Those who are dualists see the soul and the body as two separate entities. They believe that the soul can outlive the body even after the body's death. Conversely if one is a materialist, they would believe that there is no soul- only the body, therefore there is no afterlife. Being that there is no afterlife, there are no higher beings to answer to. As a result of these beliefs, the dualist has more inhibitions than their materialistic counterparts.
Those who believe in dualism tend to make more positive choices in life. Let's say that there is a high school student, William. William is a devout catholic who believes that God exists. Because of his catholic roots, he believes in an afterlife and a soul that is separate from the body. Therefore he is a perfect example of a dualist. Like many other teenagers his age, William goes to parties on the weekends. At one particular party, a friend offers him marijuana. He's told that the drug is harmless and relaxing. William thinks to himself and realizes that if he were to accept the offer, he would be going against his core values and offending God. As a result, he politely declines. In this situation, one sees that William was put in a place where he could go two ways. He could either smoke the marijuana and commit a sin against his God, or he could decline the offer and not go against his beliefs. Because of his faith in the afterlife, he saw that if he were to commit a sin, his chances of achieving eternal bliss in heaven could diminish. Therefore his dualistic morals convinced William not to take a chance with bad decisions, rather live the "moral" road and eventually have his soul rest in peace in heaven.
Those who believe in materialistic values tend to choose the wrong decisions in life. Let's change the situation and say that William is now an atheist.
