IMAGINE living on an earth free from danger and want, full of peace. That is what earth-wide security means. Is it just a dream? People of all walks of life have a real desire for security. Surely that is what you want for yourself and your loved ones. Many people looking into the future see nothing but a big question mark. Most persons want more than just a promise of better conditions to come at some indefinite, future time. There are urgent problems of life that face us right now. There is sickness, old age, family troubles, crime, violence and loneliness. There is also the insecurity that is brought on when those regarded as friends turn out to be disloyal, untrustworthy, or fail to help in time of need. Threats to our security are not diminishing in our time.
Never has the whole world of mankind been as insecure as it is today. There is a feeling of dread of a third world war involving highly militarized nations possessing what now appears to be the ultimate of weapons "the nuclear bomb or even biological weapons. As a precaution, nations maintain their military establishments at full strength. Even with treaties they do not fully trust one another.
Security means different things to different people. To one person, security is a job; to someone else, it is wealth; and to a third person, security is a crime-free environment. Does it mean something else to you? Whatever your view, you no doubt take steps to try to make your life as secure as you want it to be.
To many people, security means having material possessions. If they have a good job, a fine home and a substantial bank account, they feel they are secure. Young people who take education seriously and who desire job security are to be commended. And someone with skills and qualifications often has the edge when seeking employment. But does higher education always offer job security?.
Feeling insecure is an emotional burden and an emotional burden cannot be completely relieved by material wealth.
