Gender, Development, and Globalization

Economic justice is founded on models that economists have adhered to, even though postmodern critiques which have challenged the methodologies, assumptions, and generalizations used. (Beneria 12) This includes what Beneria calls the Washington Consensus or the idea held by the American and British government that free trade is the single solution for all economic issues. It quickly becomes apparent that Beneria is very opposed to thisconsensus.? On the other hand, gender justice is founded in the social science and based on theories that discuss the positive effects of gender equalization and female power on a country's growth. The newly created Gender-related Development Index (GDI) and Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM) are both models that attempt to quantify and validate the arguments of gender justice. (Beneria 20) Thus the constant struggle between economic models and the theories of social sciences quickly becomes apparent due to the difference in measurements of success.
Which brings us to the second issue of practical and strategic gender needs. Economists will be quick to point out the creation of jobs specifically for women in developing countries, and feminists would be just as quick to point out that these jobs do not allow any advancement and are actually a step backward because they create an excuse for not allowing women in management situations. (Beneria 21) This can actually be shown as evidenced in the difference between the Human Development Index (HDI) and the Gender-related Development Index (GDI). Countries that are known for this type of behavior (such as Japan and Saudi Arabia perhaps due to social norms) both score much lower on the GDI than the HDI. .
However, even within the feminist world we have issues between those who are fighting simply for gender equality in the workplace and those fighting for the more ideal form ofprogressive social change.
