People are judged by a law; therefore, I think that they should not make a decision whether something is right or not by themselves. How people make a decision depends on the backgrounds and culture. I mean that we have to follow the rules of the place where we live. Of course, when I read this article, I was surprised by the difference in common sense. Each country has different ideas about the definition of common sense. I have realized some differences between Japan and America since I came to America.
I realized that American people sometimes say "Hi!!" to other people who they do not know. Japanese people mostly do not greet people who they do not know. There is possibility that some Japanese people, especially in Tokyo, may think that people saying hello to them are strange. In fact, Japanese people also used to greet each other in the past, but we tend to be independent. Today, even though I sometimes greet to other people who I do not know, I had almost never done that when I was in Tokyo.
I realized that American people do not really care to make a line to wait for something such as waiting for bus. In Japan, we unconsciously make a line for waiting for bus. I have had many experiences when some people suddenly came to the front of the line, but nobody noticed. If I did that in Japan, I would be absolutely considered strange by other people. .
Following the rules where we live is the most important thing. I have met some Japanese people who have never changed their style in the U.S.A. because they are proud of their culture. For me, it is really strange. I think that people should adapt to the culture or way of life when they live in another country. Even though sometimes we need to be proud of own culture, we should follow the rules where we live. In my opinion, we should not judge what is right by only our point of view. The common sense, which you have, may be wrong for others. .
In conclusion, knowledge of another culture can be important for us because if we know about it, we can understand differences between us.
