Brooklen bridge

One hundred forty-four thousand vehicles cross the bridge every day. Even at five cents, they could be making some money. (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/wonder/structure/brooklyn.html. October 25, 2002).
This paper will give a feel for why this bridge is such a landmark in civil engineering. Lots of questions need to be answered. When and why was this bridge built? How did they build it? Why is so much myth and fascination surrounding the Great Bridge? This paper will try to cover all these topics.
WHEN AND WHY TO BUILD .
The decision to build the bridge was made a certain point in history and with specific reasons.
             When.
The thought didn't just spring out all at once. Plans for a crossing between the city of Brooklyn and lower Manhattan dated way back to the early 1800's. At the point when the East River crossing was planned, Brooklyn was just shy of half a million people. Seems fairly large, but it was still a rural location in a lot of aspects. The city of New York was only Manhattan. No other boroughs sat under its name. New York still had twice as many people as Brooklyn and the bridge was seen as a solution to overcrowding in Manhattan. It would also jump start some needed development in Brooklyn. It seemed obvious that the bridge would allow the citizens along with goods to cross the East River quickly. Weather would no longer have to be as big an issue. .
             Roebling.
So what next? In 1855, John Roebling proposed a suspension bridge over the East River. Roebling was the owner of a wire-rope company and known for his bridge designs. He had become impatient with the Atlantic Avenue-Fulton Street Ferry. That was the only way across at the time, and it had many hassles. John Roebling worked out every detail of the bridge personally. The massive towers and the four steel cables that would be used came from his brain. The elder Roebling had a lot of experience with suspension bridges on rivers in the region between 1848 and 1867.
