A Symbol of Change

In the box was a tiny musical globe, about the size of my hand. Little pink, yellow and blue houses circle the ceramic base of the globe, sculpted and painted to look like houses on a typical San Francisco street. Behind the row of houses lies a light blue sky with white, cotton ball clouds. On one of the clouds read the words "I Left my Heart in San Francisco- in red lettering. Inside the glass ball is a miniature replica of the city of San Francisco, complete with the Golden Gate Bridge and Chinatown. As one rotates the globe, he sees not only the backside of the previous view, but a different scene. In this scene, there is a cherry red trolley, San Francisco's signature, driving downhill through rich, green foliage. When shaken, tiny bits of golden glitter dance around the water-filled ball, before settling back on the bottom. With a few twists of a knob on the globe's underside, one can hear a slightly off-key, music box rendition of "I Left my Heart in San Francisco."".

I, on the other hand, gaze into the globe and am taken back to a world that I once knew. Inside it is more than .

just a miniature ceramic scene, it is a scene from my memory. I stare at the miniature bridge and can vividly recall the time I walked across it, terrified. Laughter bubbles inside of me as I look at the trolley and remember my first San Francisco trolley ride that resulted in my getting lost and having to take a forty-five minute walk to my destination.
