The prisoners were also limited on the number of packages that they could send and receive. Packages were the secondary source of food for the prisoners, but the limit on packages meant a limit on the amount of food that could be sent by someone outside of the camp. The limit on the amount of food a prisoner could have added to the difficulty of life in the prison camp. The food situation in the prisons was difficult for all people. But even with such a burden they still worked. They worked because work meant food, and because food means life. To Ivan and these men, their existence was based on how far they were able to make their rations stretch. The men lived with the basic understanding that if they were hungry there was little to be done about it. This came because the prisoners were fed three times a day, and the amount of food they were survived was so tiny. To the people in the story the need for clothing was always an underlying factor. The prison camp had very strict rules set up about what clothes and how much clothes a prisoner could wear. The wearing of extra clothes was an offense that could be sentenced with up to ten days in the guardhouse (Solzhenitsyn 37). Clothing was a very important thing. The men received new clothing only several times a year, and new shoes once a year. Thus these men had to make do with what they had. They were forced to survive by on the small amount they were given and what they could earn from others or find on there own. Considering what the weather in Russia can be like it can be understood why clothing is so important. Clothing provides protection against the weather, especially against the cold. These men risked facing punishment in the hopes that they could wear an extra shirt. They searched for every extra stitch of cloth, every rag, in order to try and protect themselves from the weather. Clothes also deals with protection from the weather.
