I believe that the drinking age should be lowered to 18. In the early 60's the government changed the drinking age to 21. I believe that if we are old enough to drive, vote, smoke, and go to war for the country then we should be able to drink. I think that if they changed the age there would be actually less kids going on binge drinking sprees.
First, I would like to know how can our country give 18 year olds the right to vote for our countries leader, but not drink alcohol. If you ask me I think that voting is one of the biggest responsibilities because that is a choice that can affect our lives. I feel that if we are old, and mature enough to vote for our president then we can drink alcohol. .
Second, how can our country draft 18 year olds for war and let them die for our country without giving them all the rights this country has to offer. This is my biggest argument because I am in the military and I am 19. I strongly feel that if an 18, 19 or 20 year old can give his life for his country then he/she should be given all of the rights of the country and that would include drinking.
Finally, one big issue that people who would oppose this is that people are not fully mature at 18. Well if you ask me, if we are mature enough to drive, vote, and fight in wars we are more than mature to drink. I know that not every 18 year old is mature but if you think about neither is every 21 year old or even every 40 year old for that matter. To me maturity lies in the hands of that individual themselves not on their age.
After talking to many people of legal age to drink, they often say that drinking and going out to bars gets very old quick. So I think that by lowering the age, by the time we are twenty we would not want to drink as much and it would be old. Besides half the reason a lot of teenagers drink is to rebel against the law. Just the thrill of whether or not they are going to get caught makes people 18-20 want to drink that much more because taking away the thrill of getting caught takes away half the fun of drinking.
