To what extent is "The Doll's house" a Modern story?.
"The doll's House" to a great extent is a modern short story. As in other modern short stories it is concerned with nuances of the characters than with the construction of a fast paced plot, it shows important facts and psychological truths indirectly, and has an epiphany.
Like every modern short story "the Doll's House" is concerned with nuances of the characters rather than the construction of a fast paced plot. Most of the characters in the story have a bad side as well as a good side to them, for example Else and Lil. Both Else and Lil are known to be bad as expressed by the views of other characters in the story, but if you realize how shy they are to talk back in their own defend, it shows how good they are just by tolerating all that insult. In the same way Aunt Beryl, is known to be good by the story because her wealth stands out, therefore she comes from a good family so has to be good herself. But when she shoos away Lil and Else away from her house and when she teaches children to stay far from them, her bad side reflects over the good. Many other characters in the story have nuance characters.
The story implies to important facts and psychological truths indirectly as in other Modern short stories. The whole story is based on discrimination, and how discriminated people are treated. But not once did the author directly tell us this fact, instead she showed it to us indirectly, by the actions and dialogues of the characters. For example Aunt Beryl's shooing them away, shows us the discrimination towards Lil and Else. These facts have not just been pulled out of nowhere but instead are truths many people have to face on our planet; not as in other stories which fantasize the problems and facts.
This story has an epiphany just as in other modern short stories. One of the epiphany's in this story was when Lil finally spoke in the end of the story, proving to us all she needed was affection and love to make her talk; the love Kezia showed them for barely a few minutes by showing them the doll's house made her speak, may it be a little.
