The Job of an Author

When reading a text of any type it is a typical habit to look at the author's name; this shapes our thoughts of a work. The problem is that there are many good writings in the world whose authors are unknown. In my opinion this is a good thing not to know about the author, that way readers are not able to make inferences about the text and can make it what they want. In not knowing anything about the person that scripted the piece no unfair expectations are brought into the reading. When facts about the author are brought into the reading, the meanings behind the words are clouded. Reading with expectations leaves the author in full control, and leaves the reader with a work that is hard to relate to. Authors, known or unknown, have an enormous responsibility to write only the framework of a story, allowing readers to fill in the gaps with their own life experiences. .
It is important to realize what the job of an author is before sitting down to write. Without being sure of the important task that lies in the hands of the author it is hard to make a work that is worth the read. The true job of an author is to create a type of framework that allows readers to be a part of the interpretation of the words. This is not to say that an author should leave literal gaps in their work; but an author should be vague enough in some areas of writing to let the reader choose what is happening. By choosing a type of authorship that leaves room for the reader, the written work appeals to a much larger selection of people. .
Being able to read a book that is written in the framework fashion is exciting. It allows readers to relate to the text in a way that draws them into the words. In any genre of writing, readers are more likely to enjoy something that they can relate to. Iser makes his point about the perfect way for an author to write when he describes the way readers read; "It is the shifting of perspectives that makes us feel that a novel is much more "true-to-life".
