This character suffers from OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). He is a novelist, that has many readers because he reads women very well. He puts off a really bad attitude, which makes people around him feel very uncomfortable when talking to him. He is obsessed with his routine, carries his own silverware, locks the door 5 times, and doesn't step on the cracks. He goes to the same restaurant everyday and orders the same thing. He has to have the same waitress, Carol Connelly. Melvin struggles to please Carol through out the movie, he has somewhat of an addiction to her and needs her approval. His disorder leaves him confused on how to act towards the people around him. Throughout the rest of the movie it shows him striving to be different for Carol, there's also another character he has to interact with, Simon Nye, a homosexual who goes through a tragedy, and they all three have to somehow get through their problems together. He continuously makes little cracks about Simons sexuality. But in the end, he helps him tremendously. Which is very out of the ordinary because of his disorder. He changes for the better at the end of the movie. He realizes how much Carol means to him and decides to act on those feelings. Which is another thing that is out of the ordinary for his character. At the beginning of the movie he wouldn't of had the guts to do what he did. .
