Cry freedom

In one way the ending of Biko's life was a tragedy, but his life, due to the publication of Woods' book, became an inspirational rallying point for black people in South Africa and throughout the African continent. Also Biko demonstrated that black and white could live in harmony together once blacks were acknowledged their rightful place in society. Attenborough regarded this was the basic belief of the Black Consciousness Movement: that black people should stand on their own feet in belief they were capable of achieving anything whites could, and as that belief grew, so would their opportunities to achieve these aims. .
Attenborough's problem was that a true film focussed on blacks would be of little interest to the vastly potential audience of the Northern Hemisphere. Many people in the US and Europe know little about apartheid. To make people aware, Cry Freedom's message is delivered with a tolerant white liberal as the main commercial drawcard. Hence Biko, although the inspiration of the film, is not the principal character. Attenborough also used well-known actors, Kevin Kline and Denzil Washington to play the parts of Woods and Biko respectively, to attract a wider audience. .
Attenborough believes God is a Bad Policeman and many other films on South Africa, all failed to keep progress with the rapidly changing South African situation. Attenborough believed strongly that you should send an audience out of the theatre believing that disaster can be avoided. Attenborough said "I wanted any anti-apartheid film I made to be unequivocal in its condemnation. But still it had to demonstrate that a solution was possible."1 .
Throughout Cry Freedom there was substantial evidence of bias and propaganda. The film is biased because the viewer is only shown scenes which would compel them to feel sympathetic towards the black South Africans. Additionally, it only shows the good side of the blacks.
