Establishing your independence

Establishing your independence is essentially the most important step that you will make in your lifetime. From when you begin to establish a circle of friends, to when u move off to college there are several steps that you make that move you towards your goal of being truly independent. The personal changes you make while growing up determine your level of independence. Some of us still cling to our parent's coattails well into elementary. Some of us are solitary, establishing few friends until our college years. Regardless of the level of independence, there are 5 main changes that most people go through during school that shape who they will become, and how they will react to big changes such as going to school.
When you enter Junior High School, it's a very different playing field. By that I mean that it's not about having fun and running around on the playground, it's about who's cool and who's not. Just a year ago in 5th grade no one cared who played with who or what kind of clothes you wore. You also begin to establish a specific circle of friends. My 5th grade Social studies teacher told us periodically during the school year that things would change drastically for us and that we would start hanging out with a specific group of friends. I didn't really believe him at the time but now looking back I realize he was right.
The next huge step in the independence process is when you turn 16 years old. When you turn 16 and receive your driver's license, you get a crash course in elementary independence. Driving allows you to hang out with whoever you want, do whatever you want, and go wherever you want, without necessarily the permission of your parents. It's not necessarily a good thing morally, but one thing driving does teach everyone, the choices you make have consequences. It teaches you to be responsible, which in turn makes you more independent. .
Another step is when you finally give in to your parents nagging and you get your 1st job.
