Hammurabi

He did this mainly to satisfy the people and smooth the transition between the cultures. Hammurabi knowledged that if the transition between the cultures were done so without dramatic change, the people would also find no reason to object or riot. If he had not adapted the culture so smoothly and the people had been given reason to oppose his rule, internal disorder would have been caused among them. Hammurabi's power would have been weakened, as would the nations, and the empire would have become vulnerable. One of Hammurabi's most diplomatic strategies was to gain the trust of the people and meet the demands of the many different groups. He was seen as a personal leader because he researched the wants and needs of not only the wealthy, but also all of the empire's people. One of the reasons Hammurabi's reign lasted so long was because as he gave, he received much respect and support from his subjects. Hammurabi was able to unite the people of Babylon by striving to gain the trust of the people. Hammurabi displayed social genius that has rarely been seen. .
During his reign Hammurabi remarkably adapted religion to incorporate the two cultures. He allowed the regions current gods to be worshiped but placed his god, "Marduk", as the superior god. Hammurabi was intelligent in the way he ordered this. Because he knew that a large change would cause problems among the people, Hammurabi had to keep the religion similar to the way it was before in order to keep the people familiar with their ruler and each other. The people adapted to this concept readily. In a society that was extremely religion-based, this indicates that Hammurabi must have been a tactful, successful and persuasive leader to please his people even when adapting their main spiritual issue. The people also believed in the divine right, so when convincing the people to include his god as superior he also convinced them that he was Marduk's representative on earth.
