Economic Base Analysis of San Francisco


It was first settled in 1776 but grew rapidly due to the California gold rush starting in 1848. San Francisco is famous for its hills and the streets which run straight up and down them (Wikipedia, 2001). It is also the center of three large international airports which include San Francisco International Airport, Oakland International Airport, and San Jose International Airport. San Francisco is a very popular tourist area. People from all around the globe come to see the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and various professional sports teams compete each year. Below are two arial maps of the San Francisco Bay area. The map to the left shows the core of the urban system. The right map shows the total MSA. The total area of the city and county is 232 square miles. The San Francisco MSA has a total employment of 1,034,830 workers.

             Basic Industries.
             The table below (table 1.1) displays the seven industries with the largest location quotients in 2000 along with the percentage of total local employment for each industry. In the left-most column are the NAICS codes for each industry. The industries are ranked according to their location quotient with the largest being first. The first base industry is Monetary Authorities-Central Bank. This has the highest location quotient but only comprises .2% of the total employment. The Monetary Authorities-Central Bank subsector groups are establishments that engage in performing central banking functions, such as issuing currency, managing the Nation's money supply and international reserves, holding deposits that represent the reserves of other banks and other central banks, and acting as a fiscal agent for the central government. All of the employment in this industry is under monetary authorities, NAICS 521110. .
