The Story of Actaeon

By reading threw "The Story of Actaeon" you can see numerous traits in Actaeon that suggests he is a tragic hero and Aristotle would no doubt agree because Actaeon has all the characteristics that Aristotle says a hero must have to be considered a tragic one. Actaeon is portrayed as a person of high character in numerous occasions. The first being when he is turned into a stag, he debates weather to return home to the royal place or hide in the woods. This clearly shows he has some connection to royalty, making him a person of high character. Also, he seems to be in control and gives orders to his fellow comrades and when is not around there is a sense of sadness and low-spiritedness. Actaoen comes off as a person who has hubris. He shows great pride in hunting animals and he appears to have great success in his efforts. He takes much ambition by taking the role of a leader in several situations. Actaoen makes a choice dictated by hamaritia when he wonders through the caves, directed by the fates and comes across the nakedness of Diana which leads to him getting transformed into a stag. This was clearly a mistaken judgement by Actaoen because he had no attentions to see the nakedness of Diana, his only attention was to satisfy his hunting urges. Another characteristic of Aristotle's tragic hero is that the hero must move from happiness to misery and suffering. This characteristic can be seen very easily in this myth. At the start of the myth Actaeon is very happy filling his nak to hunt and sharing his success with his friends and fellow hunters. But when his curiosity and craving for hunting takes over he ends up being turned into a stag and later goes on to be killed by the commands of his fellow companions. The moment he is transformed into a stag he feels a sense of shame and fear of going back to his home and even he could be heard he would be too ashamed to face his friends and peers even tho he did nothing wrong and was a victim of a higher power.
