I"m feeling a little down in the dumps. This statement is used daily by people everywhere in America, but little do we know that it may be something more serious then feeling "down in the dumps." It may be that this individual may be suffering from major depression. As stated in the book Invitation to Psychology Second Edition by Carole Wade, major depression is a mood disorder involving disturbances in emotion behavior cognition, and body function. It is also stated that these disturbances are severe enough to disrupt a person's ordinary functioning for six months or longer. So let's take a look on how people act with this disorder and what are the symptoms. .
"The core problems that an individual may start showing with major depression is that they may have social and/or occupation impairment. They may feel apathy or irritability or hostility." (www.Nami.org/helpline/depress.htm, Ellen Frank, PhD May 2003.) "Scientific research has firmly established that major depression is a biological brain disorder." (Frank, May 2003) There are three neurotransmitters that are present in the brain cell and these 3 neurotransmitter play a key factor or how we behave which is key with major depression. But still today we really don't know the answer to how some develops major depression. But we do know how we can treat such a disease.
"Between 80 and 90 percent of those suffering from serious depression can be effectively treated and return to their normal daily activities and feelings." (Frank, May 2003) Major depression is highly treatable are there are numerous treatments that an individual can take to cure this illness. There are three basic types of treatment for depression: medications, psychotherapy, and electroconvulsive therapy. (Wade) Medications are easiest to obtain and you can take them orally. Psychotherapy is something you can do to maybe alter your perspective mentally in your head by socializing with the problem.
