The same author goes on to say that many hair tests now check for more that is required (2,3). Gombos states that when the THC metabolites are in the blood they go through the hair. The THC metabolite remains in the hair as a permanent record. Gombos also states that labs usually use the hair one and a half inches from the scalp; however, some labs can take out enough hair to have a three-year history (8). The author of "Onsite Drug Testing" states that for a thirty-day history labs take a half of an inch and for a ninety-day history they take an inch and a half. Some labs may want a six-month history and take up to three inches of hair. The hair samples are always measured from the root of the hair to the end of length needed (2). The same author states that the majority of companies spend less money on hair testing because drug abusers cannot alter the hair test. They are usually aware of this before the test. By using the hair test companies do not waste a lot of money on drug abusers trying to trick the companies" drug test (1). There are many rumors on hair testing. According to Gombos bleaching or dying your hair does not work. Even though swimming and washing hair removes toxins, these approaches are not guaranteed to work (8). Gombos also notes that the hair test discriminates in that detection is easier in dark hair. Colored people could be discriminated against further because the melanin in their hair is often mistaken for THC.
There are a few other drug tests that are not very common. These include the blood test, saliva test, and the sweat test. The author of "Drug Testing Basics" states that even though the blood test is the most accurate method of testing, it is not common because of the expenses.
