These were the general statistics based an average weeks drinking.
"Each year thousands of freshmen come to WSU with newfound freedom. With Pullman being such a small town and the weather so bad in the winter and fall, many students take up drinking and other bad influences to occupy their time. While this is the typical image that most people think of when talking about WSU, it is not really true anymore. More and more lately, the programs that WSU officials are putting in place seem to really be working (In the Media)." This statement is the new media that WSU has been trying to get out, making itself look more and more like it is not a party school, and it has there is no drinking problem at WSU, or at least no more than other schools. Alcoholism does not depend on age or race (Oneter). However from the students interviewed they all agreed that WSU is a party school, they drink to do what is socially acceptable here, have fun, forget about problems, and because they like the way it makes them feel. The mass majority of the people they know have drinking habits similar or worse than their own, and say they do not agree with the new statement that WSU has programs that seem to really be working (Interviews 1, 2, 4, 7). .
All people interviewed were asked if they think they could explain the statistics that say WSU is cleaning up the drinking problem such as, 58.7% in 1991of the student body drinking more than 5 drinks at a party to 17.6% in 1999 (In the Media). In response the general statements ranged from "students are learning how not to get caught (Interview 2)," to "Students lie when they get caught, they don't want to admit to what they have done because they feel ashamed, I know when I was caught and had to go to the two class counseling session I didn't fill out the survey truthfully (Interview 1)." The statistics can be disagreed with, but then you think about why do they do it? What is so great about drinking non-stop, there is no benefit.
