Gifted And Talented


            Children that are gifted or talented may face more stresses than their peers. They have more stresses because they sometimes have a hard time understanding their limitations. They often have a hard time drawing the fine line between excelling and attempting perfection. All children face some stresses in life, but as a gifted or talented child they may face more. Some signs of stress could be.
             Always bored and tired.
             Suffers from sleeplessness or hard to wake up.
             Overreacts to everyday events.
             Complains of ailments frequently such as headaches, stomachaches.
             Needs constant support and reassurance.
             Acts out aggressively often to seek attention.
             Exhausted - mentally, emotionally and physically.
             There are unhealthy ways of coping with stress. If a child is showing signs of stress it could be because he/she is trying to cope with his /her anxieties unsuccessfully. There are many different things a child could do to help with coping with his/ her problems. Some forms of unhealthy coping could be as follows.
             Not trying because failure is too risky.
             Trying to hard.
             Depending on drugs and/or alcohol.
             There are several healthy ways of coping. Perspective, support, humor, motivation can all make a big difference with coping. To do this they must do some if not all of the following.
             Take a break.
             Work for personal satisfaction.
             Hang out with friends and family.
             Find a comfort source for the stress.
             Exercise and eat well along with get the proper amount of sleep.
             Many gifted and talented children put self- worth and identity with how high they achieve. If they have any failure it could be a blow to there sense of self-esteem. If a gifted or talented child gets into to many activities or too many classes it can cause an overload which can lead to burnout. They need to have fun. They need to play games, listen to music or just go for a walk. They need to spend time without thinking of their studies. They need to make and take time out to be just a kid and not be just a book worm.
