Critical Analysis of

(Nortan anthology 2044).
As we have seen earlier, at the time the story was written the people of southern society, exhibited different traits than the present. Emily was brought up in a wealthy family, people of which always struggle to showoff their wealth and maintain their social position, status and identity. As we see that, emily's father denied all young men who wanted her, might be because of his fear for society and social consciousness along with the pride in his wealth. Coming to the people of the society, they have shown their sympathy and humanized her saying "Poor Emily", only after her father's death and when she was left alone and considered paupered, with a old house remaining as her sole property. Otherthan exhibiting their vivid colors, they never seemed to extend any kind of moral support , when emily's father ruled her life or when her lover deserted her. Instead, the younger generations in power, wanted her to pay taxes, those once remitted, eventhough she was saying "I have no taxes in Jefferson" (Faulkner 73).
Emily's life presents a clear picture of how male dominance and too much control can change and create negative impacts in a woman's life.Emily seemed to be just like anyother girl, who urged for love and affection, her own family and children , and ofcourse to have her own identity. Emily's father showed his dominance, by denying all youngmen who showed interest in emily and thus collapsing all of her dreams. He kept her house arrested and treated her like a housekeeper. After his death, it is Homer Barron, who made Emily develop some interest in life. But later when she learned that, Homer is just getting pleasure out of their relationship and deserted her, she seemed to be developing a sence of hate in people and society and thus motivating her poison her lover with arsenic. She could not get anything, lost interest in life and remained indoors, in isolation from society for over 40 years, until she dies.
