"A Rose for Emily", written by William Faulkner in 1931, gives us an insight of many factors such as, the tragic conflict between old and new south (Celia Rodriguez 1996), impact of male dominance on a woman's life and her identity, a woman's struggle for life and her quest for love, the changing colours of society and the role of social position in one's life, depicted from the actions of Miss Emily Grierson, her father Mr Grierson, Homer Barron, Colonel Sartoris and the society.
In this story , Faulkner contrasted past with the present era. The past was represented by emily herself, in colonel sartoris, in the old negro servant, and the Board of Aldermen, who acepted the colonel's attitude towards emily and remitted her taxes. The present was expressed chiefly through the words of the unnamed narrator(The society), the new Board of Alderman, Homer Barron ( the representative of yankee attitude toward the Griersons and thus toward the entire south), and in what is called "The next generation with its more modern ideas" all represented the present time period (Norton Anthology 044).
The description of her house "lifting it's stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps - an eyesore among eyesores" represented a juxtaposition of the past and present and was an emblematic presentation of emily herself.
