A Midsummer Nights Dream

In the whimsical world of William Shakespeare's comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream, there are several important female characters involved. Obviously some might say that the two lovers, Hermia and Helena, are the most important females to the story but I tend to think that the Titania the fairy queen is the most enchanting of them all. But Titania is nonetheless a very critical character to the story as well. Her role in regards to the other characters is mainly that of the fairy queen, wife of Oberon the fairy king. Her part of the story is mainly focused on her feud with Oberon and her love affair with Bottom. .
The disagreement between Titania and Oberon, over the little Indian changeling boy, is one of the major plots of the story. I think that it makes her role very good because it show's that she is a strong independent woman who doesn't back down even though Oberon is making it very clear that he won't stop until he gets what he wants, and this is quite significant considering it goes against the way women were brought up to act in Shakespeare's time. Her reason for why she will not give up the boy is quite sincere too and shows that she is a caring loyal person. She obviously cared very much for her votaress, "and for her sake I do rear up her boy, and for her sake I will not part with him," (Act II; ii; 77-78). Overall, I would say that this debate between Oberon and Titania was used in order to show how good of a person she was and to make Oberon look bad for wanting the child so much simply because of pride. .
The part of the play involving Titania in which she is madly in love with an ass, a.k.a. Bottom I think in ways is used simply for the comedic aspects of it. Although, a slightly ironic part about it is that she becomes almost opposite of how her character is portrayed earlier in the play. Rather then being the independent woman she is, she simply becomes a loving doting woman set on pleasing Bottom, and in her embarrassment straight gave the child to Oberon.
