Health Essay

Within this group are two models: Gollwitzer's Implementation Intentions and Bagozzi's Goal theory. Multi-stage theories are the final group which consists of models which consider the processes which cause behavioural enaction and provide maintenance strategies. In this group are: the Health Action Process approach (HAPA), Heckhausen's Rubicon Model, Kuhl's Action Control Theory, Transtheoretical Model of Change and the Precaution Adoption process model. .
             .
With so many models being present and there being a certain degree of similarity and overlap between models in each group (Armitage & Conner 2000) only two models will be examined in this essay. The Health Belief Model (HBM) and Health Action Process Approach model (HAPA) will be looked at as the HBM is one of the earliest (first conceived in 1966), most basic models whereas the HAPA model is more recent (1992) and comprehensive. Also both these models are considered to be grouped differently, or rather, are different "types" of models (Ogden, 1998; Armitage & Conner, 2000).
             .
The Health Belief model considers six factors as determinants of behaviour. These are: Perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, health motivation and cues to action (Armitage & Conner 200). Variation in the perception of these factors is due partly to demographic variables (Ogden, 1998). The combination of perceived susceptibility and perceived severity can be seen as representing the "threat" of a particular health behaviour, whilst the combination of perceived benefits and perceived barriers form the basis for evaluating courses of action (Armitage & Conner, 2000). To put the model into action, if an individual thought their health behaviour to be making them, or placing them in a situation where they are, highly susceptible to a sever illness then it would be likely they would perceive a high threat and avoid that action if there were few perceived barriers to stopping the behaviour and if they perceived benefits were high.
