Explore Shakespeare's presentation and use of relationships in The Tempest.
There are many different kinds of relationships in the play ranging from Love, Power and Hatred. These emotions can be seen from many different kinds of characters and these characters are all important to each aspect of the play. These relationships can teach the audience how to act and also show what others reactions can effect others. Shakespeare presents each relationship individually each with a different point to show. They all have an importance in the play that also can reflect to the Shakespearean lifestyle and the thoughts of his time. .
Prospero has the power and speaks the most in The Tempest. I am going to examine the most important relationship to me - Miranda and Prospero. Miranda and Prospero are a very big part in this play because they are the bases of the play. This is because if Prospero hadn't been usurped from Milan and ended up in an unknown island this play would have no meaning and we would not have met Caliban, Ariel and the other spirits. Prospero has lots of impact on Miranda and this is shown by the amount of power he has on her and everyone else. This power is shown when he is speaking to Miranda about their past and why they were usurped, when he doesn't want to talk anymore, and so puts her to sleep and Miranda has no choice. .
.
Here cease more questions, .
Thou art inclined to sleep; "tis a good dullness,.
And give it way: I know thou canst not choose.
This relationship may also have an affectionate side to it too as Prospero cares for Miranda. .
I have done nothing but in care of thee,.
Of thee, my dear one; thee, my daughter (I.2.16-17).
Prospero also cares a great deal for Miranda's welfare because when she meets Ferdinand Prospero spies on her to see if Ferdinand treats her kindly and honestly. He plays some evil tricks on Ferdinand to see if he is good enough for Miranda. Prospero test Ferdinand to see if he really does love Miranda.
