World war one

            The soldiers often fought for long periods of time and that would tire them out completely "To hide all day, and then work all night Till there is no sense to time". Here the author described to the reader how hard it was, nobody got any rest and the days would go on forever. After reading this poem I think that many young Canadians stopped volunteering for the war because they began to realize what the conditions were really like. It was not some sort of adventure it was more like being in a torture cell. The ones who did not want to volunteer saw knew that war would just be like how the poem described it; horrible and disgusting. .
             4. The poem by George M Cohan was different from the rest of the poems. The message that the author was sending was that war was a good thing. It was telling the soldiers that if they came to fight in the war their loved ones would be proud knowing that they are half way across the world battling. The poem I thought was persuasive and if a person had read it before actually going to the war they would be more likely to go. The poem also talked about how they would go and fight till the end and would only return when it was over. The author had a positive view of the war and if the men went to go and fight they would show liberty and respect for their country. .
             5. All the poems except "Over There" were negative about the war. I think that many poets had negative poems because many people knew that war was not a pleasant situation. The poets may have been in the war prior to writing these poems therefore knew what kind of conditions were out there for the soldiers. With so many soldiers dying I"m sure no poet would think of war as being a good thing. Furthermore the poets may have witnessed first hand the problems and thought that the only way to stop other men from going to war was to write about the reality of war. .
