Isolation of Murder

Suspense is how William Faulkner keeps his reader intrigued in "A Rose for Emily." He introduces the reader to the dramatic protagonist, Emily Grierson. He describes Emily's life as emotional and mysterious. She has isolated herself from the people of the town she lives in and the world around her. Faulkner uses flashbacks and exposition so the reader can see the changes she goes through. The theme of isolation is revealed through the author's creation of plot. .
The story begins with the death of Miss Emily Grierson. Faulkner shows that the town thinks of Emily as "a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town" (75). Emily is a lady of high standard and is described as a slender woman. She has low self-esteem and is living with a father who "kept her more or less locked up" (Faulkner 82). He drove away any young men who may have wanted to court her, and never felt anyone was good enough for her. Emily is never allowed to make her own decisions; her father has always made them for her. So when her father, dies she isolates herself from the town. Her mind cannot grasp life without being controlled. For this reason, when some of the ladies from the town come to offer their condolences, she remarks "Her father was not dead" (Faulkner 77). Ultimately, she does accept her father's death and lets the appropriate people take care of his body. Despite her acceptance of his death, she continues to isolate herself from the town. She is frightened of the changes in her life that are taking place. So she stays hidden from the world in her home for several months.
Eventually, Emily reappears in the town with a new look. Faulkner describes her as looking like a girl "with a vague resemblance to those in colored church windows-sort of tragic and serene" (77). Also, the town starts changing to more modernized ideas. They begin construction to pave the roads and add sidewalks to the streets.
