100 years war

During the 1300's and 1400's disease, famine and war were the primary conflicts governmental systems faced. The most famous of these conflicts was the 100 years war. The 100 years war was between England and France but fighting broke out through most of Europe. Governmental systems and peace with foreign powers broke down slowly which lead to one of the causes of the war. During this time the crown of England succeed in reigning throughout parts of Portugal, France, Naples, Hungary, Poland and some Scandinavian countries. The 100 years war was in actually fought continually for 100 years but fought in phases throughout those 100 years.
Many reasons led to the 100 years war. Some of the causes include dynastic instability, fiscal pressures, and factional rivalries. The most provoking issue that started the 100 years war was a dispute over the succession of a French royal. The Capetians, the dynasty that ruled for over three generations had produced male heirs for over three hundred years but the last three kings died without producing a male heir. The nearest surviving relative was King Edward III of England, but the government chose Philip of Valois, a first cousin of the previous kings to be king. Another important factor was the clash of French and English interests in Flanders, an area in which cloth-making industry relied on England for wool. King Philip ordered the arrest of all English merchants in Flanders. To this King Edward cut off the export of wool, this spread unemployment throughout the country. The people of England revolted and asked King Edward to claim his right to the French Crown. .
At the start of the war the French had superiority over England. Their population was about 15 million while England's was about 5 million, but this never became a problem because the English had French subjects such as the Flemings, Gascons, and Burgundians on their side. During the first phase of the war the English were victorious.
