Terrorism

A major war against terrorism was waged by the United States which took place in Afghanistan and many other nations gave money or troops to help support the war. Recently, Israel took action against the constant Palestinian suicide bombers by erecting a wall in the west bank. Although this was a good idea, Israel built the wall on Palestinian land and is therefore illegal. Al-Qa"ida is suspected to have several thousand members. Arrests of high-ranking officials in Al-Qa"ida have managed to interrupt many acts of terrorism, but it has also fueled hatred among other members and gave them motivation to try harder. Also, with these arrests, other terrorist and extremist groups such as the Egyptian al-Gama'at al-Islamiyya, Egyptian al-Jihad, al-Gama"a al-Islamiyya, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, and the Harakat ul-Mujahidin have also stepped up their efforts. Other supporters of Al-Qa"ida are the Sunni extremist groups which operate throughout the world in conjunction with Al-Qa"ida. Because Al-Qa"ida and its partners are stationed throughout the world, it has been a very difficult task to suppress them. The United States has made the best effort by attacking the Taliban government in Afghanistan which is known to have direct links to Al-Qa"ida and more specifically known for harboring Osama Bin Ladin. Another way the United States has been trying to stop terrorism is by cutting funds that are sent to Al-Qa"ida, but because they come from a vast array of places, this too has been a very difficult task.
             Past United Nations Action.
Due to the events of September 11th, 2001, the United Nations, and more specifically the Security Council, has stepped up their work on the terrorism issue. On September 28th, 2001, seventeen days after the terrible events that occurred in the United States, the United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 1373 based on Article VII of the United Nations Charter which deals with international peace and security.
