Up until the present, CBC Radio owns and operates two main English networks, CBC Radio 1 and CBC Radio 2. It's French counterpart, also known as, Radio-Canada oversees two main French language networks, La Premiere chane and La chane culterelle ("Profile of -). CBC Radio and Radio-Canada together possess a total of seventy-four stations across the country. Overall, CBC Radio has been successful as it is estimated that over fifty percent of Canadians use at least one of the four CBC radio services weekly (Bélanger 169). This success is not based on increasing listeners by providing mainstream programming. CBC Radio has a unique, noncommercial style that allows it to explore different programming techniques and ultimately offer what is not necessarily considered by mainstream stations. In both French and English languages, the AM network concentrates on news, information, light entertainment and community programming. The FM network offers more serious and specialized material with an emphasis on music, drama, documentary programming and the arts ("CBC/SRC-). CBC's programming offered a variety of choices from the start. Between 1937-1938, CBC broadcasted symphonic, chamber and choral music, original plays and classics, university debates, Canadian Press news bulletins, religious periods, variety shows, NHL Hockey games and children's programming ("CBC/SRC-). Although the CBC stations still played some American shows, the wide variety of Canadian programming options allowed a much greater demographic of Canadian listeners. There was something for everyone on the CBC airwaves. A recent survey shows that nine out of ten Canadians responded in favor of CBC/Radio-Canada (Taylor). Ultimately, the CBC is accomplishing its task, Canadians are realizing the importance of having such stations to broadcast a nationalistic voice. .
