Not All Grandmothers Are The Same

We have all heard that no two people are exactly the same. In fact, all people have their own style, personality, and feelings. Also, every person has a different outlook on life. The grandmother in Flannery O"Connor's, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is very different from the Granny in Katherine Porter's, "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall.".
The first major difference between the two grandmothers is their relationship with their families. Granny Weatherall is more independent minded and she prefers to be alone at times. On the other hand, the grandmother from "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is the total opposite. The grandmother always wants to be right there with the family everywhere they go. Although she is able to live on her own she still prefers to live with her son, Bailey. Also, she acts like the mother of the children and doesn't respect Bailey's wife. She solely refers to her as "the children's mother" and never by her name.
Another difference between Granny Weatherall and the grandmother is their faith in God. Towards the beginning of "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall," Granny says, "God, for all my life I thank Thee, without Thee, my God, I could have never done it. Hail, Mary, full of grace."( Porter 83) This shows the reader that she is very faithful and is very thankful to God. However, near the end of the story, she loses faith in God and shortly after she dies. The grandmother in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is also a very religious woman who has much faith in God. Even when she was put in a life or death situation she never lost faith. In fact, she kept praying and trying to convince the Misfit to accept God into his life. The last words the grandmother spoke were to the misfit. She said, "Why you"re one of my babies. You"re one of my own children!"(O"Connor 272) Unfortunately this didn't have the affect on the Misfit the grandmother was hoping for, instead the Misfit sprang back and shot her three times in the chest.
